Reinard Harkema Papers 1936-1978

The Reinard Harkema papers contain student recommendations, student photos, professional correspondence, and other professional papers associated with Harkema's tenure as professor of zoology at North Carolina State University, 1936 to 1978. Letters make up the bulk of the written collection, with notable correspondence between Harkema and David A. Becker, Alva Harris, Reginald D. Manwell, and Sturgis McKeever. Other material includes handbooks, programs, and proceedings from various North Carolina Academy of Science events and meetings; and a photograph album with pictures of Harkema's comparative anatomy classes between 1966 and 1975. Reinard Harkema (1910-1978) received his A.B. from Calvin College and his Ph.D. in 1935 from Duke University. Harkema taught at North Carolina State University from 1936 to 1978 as professor of zoology with a specialization in parasitology of wild animals. In addition to classroom teaching, he headed the pre-dental and pre-medical program in the Department of Zoology. During World War II he served in the United States Medical Corps as a parasitologist, and was a consultant to the Air Force following the war. In 1956, Dr. Harkema was elected president of the North Carolina Academy of Sciences, and in 1969 he received the NCSU Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor Award.
